A Hilliard Ensemble occurs as British male vocal quartet devoted to the authentic performance of early music. Based inside 1974, a class action is known as when the Elizabethan miniaturist painter Nicholas Hilliard. Although virtually all of its functiin focuses on music of the Medieval and Renaissance periods, a Hilliard Ensemble likewise performs contemporary music, working ofttimes by using the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt and including in its concerts works by John Cage, Gavin Bryars, Giya Kancheli, and Heinz Holliger.
A Hilliard Ensemble, whose director is Paul Hillier, has recorded extensively for the ECM label. Within 1993, when popular interest inside Gregorian chant was at its height, a ensemble freed the Video Officium, an unprecedented collaboration by owning a Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek. A disc became one of ECM's biggest-selling releases ever, reaching a popular stock and index charts within many European countries. (Officium's sequel, a Two-Video placed Mnemosyne, followed around 1999.)
